Motivational Interviewing and Cultural Awareness
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a counseling approach that has broad application in a number of settings -- it is client-centered and works to elicit behavior change by helping clients explore and resolve ambivalence. MI is trauma-informed at its core in that its foundation relies on respect and the acceptance of the client's current state of being, while seeking to explore with clients the possibilities of change. Research on MI has demonstrated its benefits with marginalized populations who have not necessarily been treated with respect in other service settings. Cultural awareness, equity, and inclusion are foundational trauma-informed concepts that are promoted in MI and in other class offerings. The benefits of diverse perspectives and lived experiences can only contribute to the expansion of innovation, insight, creativity, and productivity for both the workforce and the clientele.
