JOB SUMMARY
This position provides specialized interpretation and translation services between English and a designated non-English language for patients, staff, and members of the public. The role requires strong language proficiency, the ability to convey complex or idiomatic expressions accurately, and the capacity to establish trust with non-English-speaking individuals. When not actively interpreting, the employee performs routine clerical tasks to support Ambulatory Health Services operations. The role also involves explaining insurance program eligibility, including Affordable Care Act requirements, and documenting information in electronic medical records.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Responsibilities/Duties
- Provide real-time interpretation between English and the designated non-English language for patients, staff, and the public.
- Translate written materials such as letters, forms, and instructions between both languages.
- Clarify or repeat information when necessary to ensure full understanding among all parties.
- Assist non-English-speaking individuals in navigating City services, programs, and Health Center resources.
- Explain insurance program benefits and eligibility criteria, including Affordable Care Act requirements.
- Document patient eligibility and application status in the electronic medical records system.
- Perform general office support tasks such as filing, answering telephone calls, and handling routine clerical work.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: High School Diploma required.
Skills/Experience
- Proficiency in English and the designated non-English language, including grammar, usage, and idiomatic expressions.
- Ability to translate routine correspondence accurately between both languages.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to convey instructions and information clearly
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, patients, and the general public.
- Basic clerical skills, including filing, phone handling, and routine office tasks.
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn electronic medical record systems.
- Knowledge of Affordable Care Act eligibility requirements (or ability to learn).
Work Environment: Standard office setting with extended periods at work station and periodic use of office equipment.
Position Type and Work Schedule: Full-time position with fringe benefits. Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM with 30-minute lunch break or as agreed to with supervisor. Days: Monday through Friday.
Travel: Work is primarily conducted on-site at the assigned Health Center.
Physical Demands: Be able to lift at least 20lbs
