The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), Division of Disease Control (DDC) is tasked with the operation and maintenance of PhilaVax, the Immunization Information System (IIS) for the City of Philadelphia. PhilaVax’s primary mission is to collect and maintain immunization records for the City of Philadelphia. Information collected by PhilaVax is utilized by providers within the City and by partner programs within PDPH. The DDC uses IIS data to help prepare for public health emergencies and provide education to the community on how to stay safe and healthy.

The IIS Education Coordinator’s primary function is to coordinate the continued education of Immunization program and IIS staff.  Their area of focus will be the research and development of technical skills to help modernize and institutional programmatic knowledge.  Area of educational focus will center around basic technical skills like SQL, SAS, XML, and Python. The IIS education coordinator will also be responsible for creating and approving lesson plans for the IIS education specialists and finding areas of concentration for them to focus on.  The IIS education Coordinator and IIS Education specialists will be responsible for advancing their own knowledge in these fields and any other determined to be of value by IIS and Immunization program leadership.  The IIS Education Coordinator may also be tasked with creating trainings for IIS related material as needed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Create educational material and structured courses for IIS and Immunization program staff.
  • Host and coordinate trainings for IIS and Immunization program staff.
  • Research and develop their own knowledge in required technical fields.
  • Provide oversight and leadership for the IIS education specialists.
  • Attend outside trainings for required technical skills.
  • Coordinate with IIS Systems lead to create trainings for new IIS modules and tertiary non-IIS support systems.
  • Prepare presentations for multiple stakeholders.
  • Willingness to help in a public health emergency.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education

  • A bachelor’s degree in Health IT, IT, Education (with an emphasis on IT), Public Health, or like field

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Teaching Certification preferred

Skills/Experience 

  • 2 years instructional experience

  • 1 of year experience managing multiple staff.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Ability to breakdown and explain complex topics.

  • Able to train students from varied educational and technical backgrounds.

  • Ability to maintain composure throughout lengthy training sessions.

  • Ability to construct organized and organize teaching material on a variety of topics.

  • Ability to assess students’ technical ability based on their participation and response during training sessions.

  • Able to provide positive and constructive criticism to Immunization program staff, IIS staff, and IIS Education Specialists.

  • Able to conduct process improvement based on constructive criticism from routine reviews of lesson plans and trainings.

  • Classroom, professional training, or tutoring experience.

  • Experience designing educational courses or trainings.

  • Profession level knowledge of Microsoft Power Point and Microsoft Office Suite

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US

Work Environment:

Standard office setting at workstation and periodic use of office equipment. This position will initially be fully remote and will transition to in-person work in accordance with public health guidance. Will be required to report to office to receive work-laptop and other equipment, as necessary.

Position Type and Work Schedule:

Full time position, typical hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.  Flex office schedule options available with supervisor approval. 

Travel:

Some travel may be necessary provided that public health guidance allows it.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift 25lbs.
