HFP participates in PHL17 In Focus segment on men’s health

January 16, 2017 – Terrell Johnson, one of the Health Federation of Philadelphia’s (HFP) health insurance navigator and community engagement specialists, was recently featured on a segment about men’s health for “In Focus” on PHL17. Hosted by Jennifer Lewis-Hall, the show focused on the importance of men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and preventative care.

Johnson focused on insurance and preventive care options available to men through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Preventative services are important to men’s health, because they help to avoid delayed care for serious health concerns such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Delaying care on these, and other issues, might ultimately lead of more expensive care (especially if uninsured), later stage diagnoses and higher death rates.

“A lot of the largest killers of men tend to be the silent killers like heart disease or stroke,” said Johnson. “These are things men really need to make sure that they stay on top of and get screened for. Fortunately, through the Affordable Care Act, these services are free.”

Johnson understands the importance of preventative health screenings. At the age of 17 he was diagnosed with ocular hypertension in his right and left eyes. If left undiagnosed and untreated it could lead to more serious conditions such as glaucoma or loss of vision.

This experience cemented Johnson’s interest in public health, in outreach and advocacy and community engagement.

As a health insurance navigator and community engagement specialist Johnson is trained to help consumers, small businesses and their employees select an ACA Marketplace plan, find providers, determine eligibility for financial assistance and assist with enrollment forms. Johnson is one of eight of HFP’s health insurance navigators who all provide health insurance assistance free of charge.

“We’re a good resource, because you may not necessarily know if you’re utilizing your coverage or getting the best use out of it,” said Johnson. “I recommend that you speak with one of our navigators to make sure that you understand your insurance. Ultimately that equips you with the information needed to be your own best health advocate.”

Johnson’s interview was aired on January 14. Click here to watch Johnson’s full interview.
