To raise awareness and promote prevention, the Health Federation of Philadelphia is recognizing National Diabetes Month by highlighting its programs that fight this prevalent condition.

“National Diabetes Month is important because it puts the spotlight on a condition known as the ‘silent killer’ ” said Modupeola Dovi, Project Director for Diabetes Prevention and Management at the Health Federation. “This month is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of diabetes screening, education, and promoting healthy lifestyles.”

Diabetes is a significant concern in the Philadelphia region. Recent statistics from the City Health Dashboard show that 14% of adults in our area report a diagnosis, a higher average than other cities in the United States. Additionally, the number of individuals developing this condition continues to rise. Data from a Philadelphia Department of Public Health Report show nearly 1 in 3 residents with diabetes are not aware they have it. This phenomenon also extends to prediabetes.

The Health Federation provides a Diabetes Prevention Program, which is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with local Federally Qualified Health Centers: Ambulatory Health Services, Delaware Valley Community Health, Esperanza Health Center, and the community organization New Kensington Community Development Corporation. The Health Federation has been a DPP-recognized provider since 2018.

More than 60 people have graduated from the DPP. The program runs over the course of one year, and through its duration, Lifestyle Coaches work to build rapport, help participants create health goals, and provide education and tips to prevent diabetes.  For more information on how to enroll in these programs, visit our program card in Connect4Health

The DPP currently has two active cohorts, and the Health Federation is in the planning and recruitment phase for three upcoming cohorts. Programs are offered in both English and Spanish. For more information on how to enroll in these programs, visit the program card in Connect4Health.
